Z-Bar Pendant Birds at Midway International Airport, Chicago

In 2018, Chicago’s Midway Airport hosted the beginnning of a multi-phase structural makeover. The full redevelopment at Midway will modernize and expand security checkpoints and terminal garages, along with the heavily-trafficked concessions area. Renowned architecture firm, Gensler, were behind the design of the “Concessions Redevelopment Program” – part of a larger revamp effort called the “Midway Modernization Program.”

Amongst the new restaurants and retailers, a total of forty-nine silver Z-Bar Pendant Birds now float above travelers in the airport’s beloved concession space. Spectators can appreciate the modernity of sleek lines in an abstract bird form: a nod to the theme of flight. This bird motif has been famously addressed in the past at Midway Airport, with Ralph Helmick and Stuart Schechter’s Rara Avis: a large, suspended sculpture of a cardinal comprised of tiny model airplanes.

Koncept’s Z-Bar Pendant is available in a variety of standard configurations and sizes. The modular LED light bars are rotatable and dimmable. The Z-Bar Pendant is an architectural lighting system: designers can create custom configurations based on their project requirements with Koncept’s dedicated web app. Many configurations are compatible with Koncept’s line of acoustic panels.
